The Keys
/ Modular input device design

/ Duration: 1 week
The Keys is a modular input device. By connecting to different functional modules, it can be macroscopically mapped to different functions on the computer to achieve more convenient and faster software operation.
Design Background
When it comes to productivity work, many users often set macros to improve efficiency (one key triggers a series of pre-set operations). Several keyboards cause the desktop to be very cluttered, and the keyboard itself is not designed for this kind of operation, so the key positions are not comfortable, and the keycaps are often confused. At the same time, many software operations, such as adjusting brush size, are less intuitive than using simple buttons or knobs. In order to solve these problems, The Keys input device was designed to use a modular mode to elegantly combine different input methods.
Product Design
The Keys uses a modular design. Each module is 30*30*10mm in size. The core of the product is a main control module. As shown in Figure 4, the main control module is connected to different modules and connected to the computer at the same time to input signals to the computer. There is also an ink screen above the main control module that can display all kinds of information, such as the software currently being used. The modules are connected through five magnetic contacts and are limited by uneven parts (see Figure 5 & 6).
Module Design
Each individual module is also customizable. As shown in the figure, the buttons, knobs, etc. exposed by all modules can be disassembled, and individual buttons can be purchased to achieve a higher degree of customization and prevent functional confusion.
